Scheduled Events, September – November 2019

Wed Sept 18. Vaseaux Boardwalk ClearingThe annual brushing of the boardwalk to the viewing blind. With more than a bare minimum of volunteers the work goes quickly. Bring loppers, pruners, etc. Meet at the parking lot 10 AM or call Skip King (250) ­485-­0263

Sun. Sept.22 Long Joe Road Moderate walk in Anarchist area. Meet at the Osoyoos Lakeview Plaza at 9.30 AM.  Leader Greg Byron­ (250) ­495­-5704.

Sat Oct 5. McIntyre Bluff. A familiar, pleasant walk from Covert Farms. Moderate difficulty, good views from top. Meet 9:30 AM at Oliver Visitor Centre.  Leader Maryse Dumas (250) ­495-­4973.

Sun., Oct. 27 Potluck Dinner at the Oliver United Church, 511 Church Ave at 5.30 PM. Bring food contribution, plate, cutlery etc. Membership renewals are due. Call Marianne (250) ­498­-2743

Sat. Nov 2: Madden Lake. A less common fall walk but we should see many ducks on the water as we circumnavigate the lake. Be prepared for chilly weather.  Meet Oliver Visitor Centre 9:30 AM.  Leader Doug Brown. For info call Skip 250-485-0263

Sun Nov 17 Kaleden to Penticton. Walk along Skaha Lake following KVR trail beside Skaha Lake. Easy but possible lengthy walk. Meet Oliver Visitor Centre at 9:30 AM. Leader Phil Harfman (250) ­495-­8071

Things to remember:

For all walks, please, be on time, as we like to start promptly! Bring lunch and water, and wear suitable footwear and clothing! Be especially prepared for chilly Fall weather! Please leave dogs home, they disturb wildlife. We would like to increase our membership, so bring a friend!

Non-members and Visitors are invited to join us on our outings. Current annual membership dues are still only: Single: $25, Family: $30.

Membership includes a subscription to “BC Nature”, mailed to members four times annually. Please pay your dues at the next meeting or outing you attend. Volunteers are always welcome! Sat. March 9: Okanagan River North – Easy flat walk along the river, to McAlpine Bridge back to Oliver. Meet at the Oliver Visitor Centre (CPR Stn) at 9.30 AM

Mon. March 18 AGM Speaker Norm Gaumont from the Vaseux Lake Stewardship Society. He will present their concerns on a variety of problems of the lake. Books donated by Mel Thorne will be for sale by contribution. A drawing for a special book, authored by Dick Cannings “Birds of the Okanagan Valley” will be available at $2 per ticket. In addition, memberships are due for most people.

Sun. March 31 KVR- Vaseaux Lake – Easy walk on the old KVR rail bed along the west side of Vaseaux Lake, possibly to the lagoons. Typically good duck viewing on the lake.

Wed.  April 3 Work party, Solana – Some work needs to be done at our project on Solana Key. Much tall grass and weeds need to be removed. A few trees need to be replaced Bring gloves, shovels, etc. for typical garden clean up. Wear good footwear and clothing since we will be on a muddy bank near water. To get to the project travel east on HWY 3 to the signal on Cottonwood, turn right one block then left. One block ahead is the project.

Sun. April 14 Ellis Creek Moderate walk. – From Oliver we will car pool to Penticton and take Carmi Avenue to the parking lot at Ellis Creek (9 km from Main Street). The hike is approximately six (6) km and will take us through an area that is known as Garnet forest fire (1994). There is very little elevation gain, stunning views overlooking Penticton. 9:00 AM Greg Byron 250-485-223218 Oliver Osoyoos Naturalist Little Fish Lake 1 Oct 14

Sat. April 27 Kruger Mountain – A moderate walk with some steep sections above the West bench of Osoyoos The route may possibly go up from Blue Lake road.

Sat. May 11 Nature Trust, Skaha Bluffs – Park along Eastside Road near Bighorn Sheep sign then hike toward Skaha Bluffs with super views and some pictographs along the way. About 400 m elevation gain overall, most uphill is at the beginning. Round trip about three (3) hours.

Apologies for the short notice regarding a minor change to our trip Saturday May 11 We will still meet at Oliver CPR 9 am. The Skaha Bluffs will be the start of the walk at 9:30, the reverse of the schedule listing. Barry Berto 250-485-4700. 

Sun. May 26 Mt Keogan – Hike up Mt. Keogan on a less travelled moderately strenuous trail to the north of the usual route .and return via normal route.

Sat. June 8 Midway trails – A popular moderate walk on trails above Midway. Hopefully, we will see some rare plants. Excellent views of valley.

Sun. June 23 Mt Kobau – Nice moderate circle route near top of Kobau to Testalinden Lake.  Probable continuation to summit, site of old fire lookout.
