SUNDAY SEPT 27 – Save The Date – 9:30 AM Oliver Visitor Centre

On Sunday, September 27, 2020, the Oliver Osoyoos Naturalists Club (OONC) will be conducting a walk and talk to check out Sockeye Salmon spawning at the river restoration areas north of Oliver.
Members and guests are welcome.
We will meet at the Oliver Visitor Centre (6431 Station Street, Oliver, BC) at 9:30 AM and walk from there.
We will go to the first site, two major oxbows, on the west side of the Okanagan River.
Then we will return a short distance and cross to the east side and continue upstream a few kilometres to phase two for more viewing and lunch.
We will then return along the east side back to the Oliver Tourism Centre.
Wear appropriate hiking gear and bring your lunch, water, questions and cameras.

American Butte Hike, Sat. Sept. 12, 9:00 AM

On Saturday September 12, the Oliver Osoyoos Naturalist Club (OONC) will be leading a hike to American Butte.
 
OONC members and guests are welcome to assemble at Lakeview Plaza in Osoyoos around 8:30 AM for registration and leave for American Butte at 9:00 AM. 
 
This will be a moderate hike with some steep sections.  Once on top of the ridge it is an easy walk allowing for rewarding views in all directions.  
 
We highly recommend that you wear appropriate hiking footwear and gear (including poles) and bring a lunch with ample water as the weather is forecast to be hot.  
 
We will drive from Osoyoos to just past Lake Killpoola and hike from there.  Total time should be about five (5) hours.  
 
We estimate that we will return to Osoyoos between 2:00 and 2:30 PM.

SAVE THE DATE – SAT AUG 29 – HIKE TO MOUNT KOBAU

We will meet at the Lakeview Plaza 9150 Main Street in Osoyoos at 9 AM.
The drive to the parking lot on Mount Kobau takes about 40 minutes, the last 20 kms once we turn off of highway 97 is over a fairly rough gravel road.
This day’s hike will first take us to the lookout over the Similkameen Valley returning to the parking lot a walk of 4.5 kms.
Part 2 of the hike will take us to the summit of Mt Kobau (elevation 1,873 meters) overlooking the Okanagan Valley.
The round trip for this portion is 2 kms.
Both segments of the hike contain some steep sections on well-defined gravely paths, walking poles and hiking boots (no sandals) are recommended.
This is considered a Moderately Difficult hike.
Hikers should bring adequate water, a lunch, insect repellent, camera, etc.
We should be returning to Osoyoos no later than 2 PM.
Social distancing and other safety measures for COVID-a9 will be in place.

UPDATE ON JOE DANDY LAKE HIKE JUNE 6

Doug Brown’s walk to Joe Dandy Lake is now planned for Saturday June 6, (not May 31) as first scheduled.

We will meet 8:30 AM at Lakeview Plaza.

The walk will allow for proper social distancing.

Doug says there will be many plants not usually seen in the Okanagan.

In lieu of the signup sheet, members must notify Doug that they are coming. (dougbrown7003@gmail.com).

Oliver Osoyoos Naturalists Club Update March 31

Oliver Osoyoos Naturalists Club Update March 31

We hope that you all remain healthy during this COVID-19 pandemic and are listening to the current messaging from both provincial and federal healthcare bodies, encouraging all of us to stay home and limit going out anywhere, except for essential services.
Your Board of Directors has made a number of decisions that impact our club.
We have cancelled our Annual General Meeting this spring due to COVID-19 concerns.
We have also suspended our schedule of April-July 2020 hikes until further notice.
We remain optimistic that our activities (hikes) will resume later this summer when healthcare authorities indicate it is appropriate to do so.

We also believe that it is important to continue with renewing our membership, for the financial health of our club.
Current annual membership dues are Single: $30, Family: $35.
